Exercise is Medicine®*
Exercise is Medicine® (EIM) calls upon universities and colleges to promote physical activity as a vital sign of health. EIM encourages faculty, staff and students to work together toward improving the health and well-being of the campus community by:
- Making movement a part of the daily campus culture.
- Assessing physical activity at every student health visit.
- Providing students with the tools necessary to strengthen healthy physical activity habits.
- Connecting university health care providers with university health fitness specialists to provide a referral system for exercise prescription.
All healthy adults aged 18–65 years old should participate in moderate intensity aerobic physical activity for a minimum of 30-minutes a day, five days per week, or vigorous intensity aerobic activity for a minimum of 20-minutes a day, three days per week. A few of the benefits of regular physical activity include:
- Heightened Focus. New “challenges,” such as physical activity, social opportunities, and increased learning can stimulate the production of new cells in the brain.
- Elevated Mood /Lower Stress. Being a student isn't easy.
- Increased Energy.
- Sharper Memory.
