Admission Criteria

  • No GRE scores are required.
  • A bachelor's degree in physics from a regionally accredited college or university is strongly preferred.* Applicants with a bachelor's degree in a related field such as chemistry, mathematics, or engineering may also be considered, provided they have completed:
    • At least two calculus-based introductory physics courses; and
    • At least two upper-level physics courses.
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 (on a 4-point scale) is required for full admission to the program, and 2.75 is required for conditional admission. GPA calculations may be based upon the cumulative units or the last 60 units of the degree. See graduate admission policies for more information.

*Applicants who do not have a degree in physics and/or lack sufficient preparation in physics and mathematics may be required to complete remedial undergraduate courses and/or additional 500-level electives from the curriculum.

Application Requirements

Submit an online application, application fee and official transcripts, along with:

  • Letter of Recommendation: One letter of recommendation from a professor/instructor (email address of recommender must be entered on application).
  • Statement of Purpose: A brief statement of purpose indicating academic and professional objectives.
  • Resume: A current professional resume, including names and contact information for three references.

Additional Requirements for International Applicants

U.S. Immigration requires F1 and J1 students to be enrolled full-time with the majority of their classes taken in-person and on campus.
