Actuarial science
Dr. Shipley joined the Mathematics Department at Towson University as a full-time lecturer in 2024, after previous Associate Professor math positions in the community college system (2011-2024). He was the director of institutional research for several years in the community college system. He has more than 15 years of teaching experience and has taught a variety of courses from developmental math, to lower division and upper division mathematics such as Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers, College Algebra, Basic Statistics, Applied Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Calculus I, II, III, Probability, Mathematical Statistics and Introduction to Real Analysis. Prior to his higher education positions, he was an actuary for 10 years (2001-2011) and continues to maintain his professional actuary designations by continuing actuarial professional development requirements. He is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). He received his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics Education from American University in 1999 and his master’s degree in mathematics from Shippensburg University in 1996. He is a proud alumnus of TU’s Mathematics Department.
